About Me
When my first two children were ages three and one, I needed a hobby to fill my time while they napped. I’ve always loved fabrics and my mom is a quilter, so I asked her to teach me to use a sewing machine. My husband and brother decided to gift me a basic sewing machine for Christmas that year, but made a bet - either I’d never touch it or I’d become obsessed. Twenty-four years later, I haven’t stopped sewing!
My passion for fabrics coupled with satisfaction from creating textile art has fueled my more-than-two-decade sewing journey. I cater to anyone who has special or cherished fabric(s) and a desire to have a one-of-a-kind keepsake….that might be viewed, displayed, gifted or used in day-to-day life. Barb Patrick Design was originally inspired by merging this hobby with an entrepreneurial spirit. I studied Sociology at Colgate University and have worked in market research, event planning, marketing, development and philanthropy over the years.
My family and friends are my everything and I always try to make time with them, no matter my sewing workload. My husband Sean and young adult children Colin, Ryan and Madeline are my biggest supporters and for this I will always be grateful.
Otherwise, a robust love of sweets and caffeine fuels me daily, coupled with a fabulous podcast playing in the background as the sewing machine hums along.
What Inspires Me
Hello From My Home Studio
My textile studio is located in our historic 1785 colonial home in Newtown, CT. The property is chock full of inspiration with a big red barn, a corn crib (they used to stack and dry corn in this small building), a garden shed, five acres of lawn and gardens, a long white fence, many fireplaces and endless charming nooks and crannies. Many, many friendships and connections have been formed at the studio as textile art projects are discussed…..all while our two energetic dogs Murph and Pippa run about.
I am so lucky to have a dedicated studio in my home, especially since my craft requires SO many notions and materials — an ironing board, heat press, sewing machine, embroidery machine, wall white board, stacks and stacks of fabric (never enough) and on and on.
My favorite time of day in the studio is late afternoon when the sun streams in. It’s often warm and quiet and feels like a refuge for me.
Heirloom Quality Quilts
An heirloom quilt is a meticulously crafted bed coverlet composed of two layers of premium fabric, enveloping a layer of “batting” for warmth. What truly distinguishes a quilt is the intricate stitching that not only holds the layers securely in place, but also imparts exceptional strength, durability, and artistry—ensuring the piece will be treasured for generations.
I select only the finest 100% cotton fabrics and materials to create each quilt. For T-shirt quilts and memory quilts, every cherished garment is expertly reinforced with a fusible interfacing stabilizer, adding both structure and resilience. The result is a quilt that is not only beautiful and meaningful, but crafted to endure and be passed down as a lasting family legacy.
